Their names have been linked for the last three months so it's only appropriate Caroline Wozniacki and Venus Williams will today meet to conclude the 2015 ASB Classic.
The undisputed stars of the tournament from the moment their involvement was announced in October, Wozniacki and Williams will this afternoon provide a final fit for a grand slam.
For the second straight year the fans at Stanley Street will be treated to an exhibition of elite tennis, featuring two women who once sat on top of the world and who both rank among the biggest names in the game.
Last year it was Williams going against Ana Ivanovic - a dramatic match the American lost. This year she will get the chance to avenge that defeat and take her 46th career title, though Wozniacki may have something to say about that.
"I love seeing the title count go up and last year I wasn't able to," Williams said after yesterday's semifinal victory over Lauren Davis. "So I would love to take it one step further and win the tournament."
While the watching public would soon sign up for a repeat of the 2014 decider, which saw Williams survive a couple of match points in the second set before losing in three, the seven-time grand slam winner had her eyes on a far more sedate affair.
"Last year's final was a real screamer," Williams said. "I think a dramatic final would be great for the fans and for the tournament but I would prefer a win that was straightforward.
"But easier said than done."
The woman standing at the other end of centre court guarantees that. Wozniacki battled hard to beat Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova in yesterday's semifinals but the fighting qualities and defensive rearguard she showed in that match should provide a tough test for Williams.
While Wozniacki has lost all five meetings between the pair, failing to take a single set, only one of those encounters has come in the last five years, with the remainder taking place while the Dane was finding her way in the sport.
"It gave me a lot of experience, I think, but I think a lot has changed since then," Wozniacki said of her history with Williams. "She is a tough competitor and has played really well this week. She has played very aggressively, served well [and] is taking the ball early.
"It's not going to be easy but I am looking forward to it and hopefully it is going to be a fun one."
