Defending champion Zheng Jie was knocked out of the ASB Classic in the first round last night going down to unseeded American Jamie Hampton.
Hampton won 7-5 6-1 and will face either New Zealand's Marina Erakovic or Canadian qualifier Stephanie Dubois in the second round.
Erakovic got her tournament off to a winning start in the doubles opening round match which ended the night session.
Erakovic and her British partner Heather Watson defeated the New Zealand duo of Paige Mary Hourigan and Claudia Williams 6-0 6-1 to advance to the second round.
