KEY POINTS:
Heineken Open tennis director Richard Palmer will be making a couple of enquiries after the surprise withdrawal of world number 10 James Blake from the Kooyong Classic field.
Palmer says he was surprised to learn of the American's sudden availability in the week prior to the Australian Open. He says Blake had been entered into Kooyong for some time, and while Blake may want to spend the week just practising, it is certainly worth making some calls.
Palmer says they have to investigate and pursue it until they are told no.
Latvian rising star Ernests Gulbis has been withdrawn from the Kooyong field, confirming his entry in the Heineken Open field. Kooyong officials have announced Fernando Verdasco will replace Gulbis in the eight strong field after a tug-of-war over the rising star's services.
Palmer says it is a relief as Gulbis did have the option of paying an ATP fine and sticking with the Melbourne event but has decided not to.
