Czech Tomas Berdych has ruled himself out of the US tennis Open after being diagnosed with appendicitis.
The world number eight says he will fly back to Europe for additional checks and treatment.
Berdych says he will need to take some time off to recover fully but is looking forward to playing again as soon as possible.
Berdych hasn't missed the last 52 grand slams, a run stretching back to the US Open in 2003.
