New Zealand tennis player Michael Venus couldnt quite finish his year on the result he wanted, playing out a loss in the final of the 2.15million euro Swiss Indoors ATP 500 tournament in Basel, Switzerland.
Venus and Swedish doubles partner, Robert Lindstedt were beaten in the final by fourth seeds Marcel Granollers (Spain) and Jack Sock (United States) 6-3 6-4 in just on an hour.
It was the ninth final of the year for Venus, however Granollers and Sock proved too strong winning their initial break in the second game of the match and the first game of the second set. The Kiwi and Swede team had earlier beaten the third seeds and the top seeds to make the final but were able to win only one of their four break point opportunities against the Spaniard and American.
Making the final is likely to improve the New Zealanders ranking to the low 30s. He has a current ranking of 39 at present with a career high of 37.
It has been a top year for Venus with significant results. Aside from the final this week he has won four ATP 250 titles with Croatian Mate Pavic; Auckland, Montpellier, Marseille and s-Hertogenbosch and been a runner-up on four occasions; Metz, Gstaad, Nice and Stockholm.
