Teenaged Canadian Davis Cup tennis player Denis Shapovalov has been defaulted for hitting the chair umpire in the face with a ball, sending his team to defeat against Great Britain in Ottawa.
Shapovalov, age 17, lost his cool after Kyle Edmund broke his serve to lead 6-3 6-4 2-1 in the deciding match. While he did not mean to hit Arnaud Gabas, refereee Brian Earley had no option but to end the match with a default call which sent Britain into the quarter-finals against France.
"It was a strange way to finish," said Edmund. British captain Leon Smith said: "I feel for the young lad. He's a great talent and he's learned a harsh lesson today."
