Daniell wins in Texas over fellow Kiwi

The battle between New Zealand Davis Cup team members has seen Marcus Daniell come out the victor in three sets over Michael Venus in the United States today.

Playing in the doubles semifinals of the US$150,000 Irving Challenger in Dallas, Texas it was Daniell and Brazilian Marcelo Demoliner who came away with the win. The pair had earlier beaten the Indian team of Purav Raja and Divij Sharan 2-6 6-3 10-4 in the quarter-finals and then accounted for Venus and Santiago Gonzalez (Mexico) 1-6 6-3 10-4 in one hour 12 minutes.

"It was a strange match, very up and down. They (Venus and Gonzalez) played a near perfect first set and we were off our game. We managed to switch the momentum after the set break and ran with it for the rest of the match. It was tricky conditions, lots of wind swirling around. Were looking forward to playing the final, whoever it may be against," said Daniell.

Daniell and Demoliner will play either top seeds Olivier Marach (Austria) and Fabrice Martin (France) or Robert Lindstedt (Sweden) and Frenchman Jeremy Chardy.

Both Daniell and Venus are in the Kiwi Davis Cup team along with Rubin Statham and Artem Sitak for the contest with Korea in Auckland next month.
