Hero of the day: Francesca Schiavone. The sixth seed broke all number of records in her marathon fourth round victory over Svetlana Kuznetsova. She was an unlikely winner at Roland Garros last year and will go into the top four in the world with this result. Maria Sharapova called the 31-year-old, who lost the first eight singles finals of her career before this unlikely renaissance, "an inspiration, not just for tennis players but for everyone who fights against the odds".
Villain of the day: Caroline Wozniacki. After being slammed for being boring early in the week, the world number one decided to add some spice to her interview sessions by talking on all manner of subjects. This included a story about being attacked by a Kangaroo at a zoo, to explain a large bandage on her leg. The yarn went round the world - "Wozniacki progresses despite 'Roo attack" before Wozniacki called a press conference four hours later to admit she had made up the tale.
"I made it up because it sounded better than what actually happened, she said. I walked into the treadmill but that was really blonde..."
Match of the day: It is the game of the tournament so far, and will take some beating over the next seven days. Svetlana Kuznetsova and Francesca Schiavone broke all manner of records in their four four, 44 minute duel that was the longest women's grand slam match of all time. The Russian had a number of gilt-edged chances but the Italian eventually prevailed 6-4 1-6 16-14.
Shot of the day: Schiavone saved six match points during the marathon and one backhand drive in particular was an unworldly combination of guts and precision at one of the hardest moments in sport.
Quote of the day: "I don't care about unforced errors. Some guys love the statistics, they love those things. I don't care if I make 20 or 60 unforced errors as long as I am doing the right things." - Roger Federer on his unusually simple approach to the game.
Quote of the day (2): "Because I'm better, so I won." - China's Li Na with an insightful response after being asked what she thought of her match and why she won.
Quote of the day (3): "I didn't know the score. I didn't know who was serving. I lost track of everything." - Svetlana Kuznetsova on memory problems during epic.
Stat of the day: Roger Federer owns yet another record. By beating Tommy Robredo in the fourth round on Sunday, he reached the semi-finals of a Grand Slam for the 27th consecutive occasion and beats Jimmy Connors' long standing record. Unparalleled consistency.
Foodwatch: Broke standard media protocol by missing the free 5pm "feed", as I was watching the Federer-Robredo clash. Arrived at 5:15 to find a few scratchy remains on empty plates devoured by all those hard working journalists, though many already have builds that a hibernating bear would be proud of. Gambled on stodge to get through until the end of the night match with wedges (A$5.50) and chicken pasta ($A7.00) before somehow blowing $A6.00 on a family sized pack of skittles - the costliest error of the week so far.
