Hero of the day: Bernard Tomic. The 18-year Aussie, with a ranking of 220, upset 31st seed Felicano Lopez in straight sets to send the locals wild. It more than made up for his petulant exit last year, when he complained that his night match had gone on hours past his normal bedtime of 10pm.
Villain of the day: Russian Nadia Petrova, wearing an outfit that belonged in a kindergarten play, sent Australian Alicia Molik out of the tournament. On a day high on predictable results it was also a sad exit for perennial favourite - and sports illustrated cover girl - Maria Kirilenko of Russia at the hands of Czech Iveta Benesova.
Match of the day: For crowd fervour, the Sam Stosur demolition of Vera Dushevina on Rod Laver arena. For drama, the Juan Martin Del Potro vs Marcos Baghdatis contest that raged well into the night. For sheer atmosphere though, Andy Murray's second round match was a stunner. Margaret Court was packed to capacity over an hour before the match, with punters lapping up the rare opportunity to see the world number four on a public court.
Shot of the day: A Del Potro dropshot at the conclusion of the third set. How can a man who stands 1.96m and weighs in at 82kg have such a feather touch?
Quote of the day: "I was like, this can't be true right? Sometimes it just doesn't go your way. As much as you believe and press and do the right things, sometimes the other guy reads your mind and it's not your day. I definitely felt something was not going my way" - Roger Federer on his state of mind when Gilles Simon came back from 0-40 down to save three consecutive match points late in the fifth set.
Quote of the day (2): "Play very bad, please. That's what I can say to him." Rafa Nadal when asked what advice he would give his next opponent, boon Australian youngster Bernard Tomic.
Stat of the day: 16 aces, top speed 210km/h, average speed 188km/h. Who is this serving superstar? John Isner? Robin Soderling? No, it was the all round genius of Andy Murray in his second round clash. He is under the radar at the moment, but will emerge in the second week.
Foodwatch: A splurge on a main meal in the media restaurant, vegetarian frittata and Caesar salad ($12.00) was healthy but ultimately unsatisfying. Thankfully the 5pm feed today was extremely satisfying - with mini empanadas and a wide selection of sandwiches.
