Hero of the day: Marin Cilic. In the best contest of the day the young Croatian outlasted John 'Mr Marathon' Isner in a match that stretched over four and a half hours. Cilic reached the semifinals last year and will have Rafa Nadal looking over his shoulder - the two are expected to meet in the fourth round.
Villain of the day: Leander Paes. The veteran Indian doubles exponent, who has garnered 6 grand slam doubles titles, managed to severely upset his Latin opponents Feliciano Lopez and Juan Monaco. The spanish-speaking duo were upset, among other things, at Paes' constant use of the spanish word 'vamos' to fire himself up. At one stage they accidentally fired a serve straight at Paes when he was stood at the net, and the duo refused to shake hands after the match.
Match of the day: No contest. The Marin Cilic vs John Isner epic in front of a passionate crowd on Margaret Court. Though it was never going to threaten that marathon contest at Wimbledon, the 6-4 2-6 7-6 6-7 9-7 was four hours and 33 minutes of pure drama.
Shot of the day: He was overwhelmed, but Spanish 32nd seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez managed one moment of magic in a 6-1 6-1 6-2 mauling by Andy Murray. Garcia-Lopez was completely outfoxed by a Murray lob but raced back and flicked the ball between his legs and down the line, past the clearly surprised Brit.
Quote of the day: "I used 'vamos' and they got upset. If these guys are going to get upset, I'm going to continue to use it. Nobody has a patent on that word." - Leander Paes with his side of the story.
Quote of the day (2): "Yeah, we meet sometimes. Sometimes he calls me and he also sends text messages. It's nice." - Robin Soderling on contact with his hero and Swedish tennis legend Bjorn Borg.
Stat of the day: Bernard Tomic was fighting a huge weight of history in his battle against Nadal. Since 1985 only three Australians - Pat Cash, Mark Philippoussis and Pat Rafter - have beaten the world number one at a grand slam and the trio were ranked inside the top ten at the time.
Foodwatch: The 5pm feed of sausage rolls and chicken and avocado club matches sustained everyone until well into the night. Not many options at 11pm, so a tuna pita bread ($7.00) (complete with shredded carrot; doesn't work) and three snickers bars (at $3.00 each!) had to do the job.
