The first of the quarter-finals at the 2011 Australian Open and some mouth watering matches in prospect.
No. 2 Roger Federer v No. 19 Stanislas Wawrinka
The Swiss duo face each other for the eighth time since 2005; Federer has a 6-1 edge on his compatriot. Wawrinka was talking tough, but does he really believe he can beat Federer on the biggest stage. Both men are unbeaten so far in 2011, and their two glorious single-handed backhands will be worth the price of admission alone.
No. 3 Novak Djokovic v No. 6 Tomas Berdych
Clash of the titans. The two Eastern Europeans have met five times since 2008, with the Czech's sole win coming in the Wimbledon semifinal last year. This will be Djokovic fourth straight quarter final in Melbourne, whereas it is the first time Berdych has reached the last eight at an Australian Open. Both men have been in good form but Djokovic's experience should give him the edge. Expect four sets.
No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki vs No. 6 Francesca Schiavone
How will the Italian back up after her near five-hour marathon on Sunday? The past four encounters have been split two apiece, but it is hard to see how the 30-year-old Schiavone will have much left in the tank as she has so far spent over eleven hours on court, while her opponent has only been out there for just over five. Wozniacki will retain her number one ranking if she wins this match, though she has used up a lot of nervous energy with her bizarre lying and retraction on Sunday regarding the Kangaroo story.
No. 30 Andrea Petkovic vs No. 9 Li Na
All the neutrals want to see the Petkovic victory dance again and the German has become one of the darlings of the tournament. Li Na has been playing great tennis but can be very hot and cold. Her experience last year, where she made a run all the way to the last four, will help her whereas the 23-year-old German is in her first Grand Slam quarter-final. This is the first clash between the two.
