Rafael Nadal v David Ferrer
The match between number one Nadal and number seven Ferrer is an all-Spanish clash - the second one-nation quarterfinal here following the all-Swiss encounter on Tuesday. Nadal is on a seven-match winning streak against his older countryman, which includes two victories on hard court. However, the last time they met at a Grand Slam, it was Ferrer who emerged victorious. He defeated Nadal in the round of 16 at the 2007 US Open en route to his first and only semifinal appearance at a major to date. It would take a brave man to back Ferrer today though.
Prediction: Nadal in three sets.
Andy Murray v Alexandr Dolgopolov
Dolgopolov is bidding to become the first man since Nicolas Escude in 1998 to reach the semifinals on his debut at Melbourne Park. At 22 years 2 months, the Ukrainian is also the youngest man through to the quarterfinals here. Murray and Dolgopolov have met just once before in the 2006 Davis Cup Europe/Africa Zone Group I relegation play-off tie in Odessa where Great Britain won 3-2. Just like last year, Murray has yet to drop a set on his run to the quarter-finals. If he maintains his concentration he will be too strong for the Eastern European.
Prediction: Murray in four sets.
Agnieszka Radwanska vs Kim Clijsters
The 14th seeded Pole is bidding to reach her first-ever grand slam semifinal, whereas her opponent has already made the last four of a major on 14 previous occasions. The 21-year-old Eastern European has already made history, becoming the first player from her country since 1939 to reach the last eight of a major. Clijsters is clearly the best player in the field and the tournament is on her racquet; if she performs, her fourth Grand Slam title is a certainty.
Prediction: Clijsters in three sets.
Vera Zvonareva v Petra Kvitova
Zvonareva is still nominally the world number two, but needs to win over more doubters here in Melbourne. Her opposition has a familiar look about it, incredibly the Russian will face a Czech left hander for the third match in a row. Kvitova is a dark horse and has a proven big match temperament - her performance to beat Sam Stosur in front of a parochial home crowd was quite incredible.
Prediction: Kvitova in three sets.
