Roger that: Federer back on court and more than a little wary of French second round opponent Gilles Simon. He is one of only three players that has a winning record over the Swiss master (Andy Murray and Rafa Nadal are the others) and Federer has yet to beat the Frenchman. Still, Simon will need to win the first two sets to have any chance; he has struggled with injury and won't last five sets.
Big guns: Novak Djovokic (#3), Tomas Berdych (#6) and Andy Roddick (#9) in action on the men's side while Caroline Wozniacki (#1), Venus Williams (#4) and Justine Henin (#11) lead out the women.
Auckland factor: Maria Sharapova takes on Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano (#100) while Tommy Robredo takes on Mardy Fish.
Don't miss: Wildcard Aussie Jelena Dokic in the first night match (9pm NZ time). She has started promisingly, the Australian media are talking her up and the punters are hoping for a repeat of her miracle run in 2009.
Match of the day: Fernando Verdasco (#9) vs Serbian Janko Tipsarevic. Tipsarevic was the man who came oh so close to upsetting Federer three years ago and is a very dangerous floater. This one has five sets all over it.
