Five-time Olympic swim champion Ian Thorpe has confirmed he suffered financial problems after his personal savings were affected by the global economic crisis.
The Australian, who retired in November 2006, said he recently had serious cashflow problems after shedding lucrative sponsorship deals to focus on his university studies.
He now has streamlined his interests, declaring he wants to lead "a happy and simple life".
