Moss Burmester has equalled the New Zealand record of 50.94 seconds in finishing fifth in the 100m butterfly at the world short course swimming championships in Manchester.
Corney Swanepoel, who bettered his own four-year-old national record by 0.73 seconds yesterday, came home in 51.20 seconds to finish sixth. The event was won by Slovenia's Peter Mankoc in 50.04 seconds.
Glenn Snyders was seventh in the men's 100m breaststroke final, clocking 58.38sec. He stopped the clock in 58.67sec in qualifying yesterday.
Igor Borysik of Ukraine won the gold medal in 57.74sec.
Earlier, Zoe Baker just missed a podium place in a world record 50m breaststroke race today.
The first of the Kiwis to go in the finals today, Baker finished fourth in the women's 50m breastroke final 0.03 behind Britain's Kate Haywood and Australian Sarah Katsoulis, both deadheating (30.35sec) for second.
American Jessica Hardy won in a world record time of 29.58sec, beating the 29.90sec set by Jade Edmistone of Australia in Brisbane on 2004.
Baker clocked 30.38sec after a 30.27, a national record, in yesterday's semifinal.
Baker, sixth in the world short course final in Shanghai two years ago and a bronze medallist in 2002, took 0.01sec off her own New Zealand record in qualifying second fastest yesterday.
The Christchurch-based swimmer was fifth fastest in the morning heats in 30.82sec but improved to win the second semifinal in 30.27sec.
She was among the top three at the turn today but fell off the pace in the last 10m.
