Auckland swimmer Dean Kent broke Danyon Loader's New Zealand record for the 200m individual medley at a World Cup meeting in Sydney on Saturday night.
Kent, aged 19, swam the event in 2m 0.62s to undercut Loader's time of 2m 0.80s and qualify for the world shortcourse championships in Hong Kong in April.
New Zealander Alison Fitch swam a personal best of 55.95s to finish seventh in the women's 100m freestyle, but her time was 0.48s outside the world championship qualifying time.
