SYDNEY - New Zealand's Moss Burmester qualified 10th fastest for the 200m butterfly semifinals at the world swimming championships in Melbourne today.
Swimming in the sixth heat of eight in his best event, Burmester recorded one minute 57.53 seconds to finish a tidy second to Poland's Pawel Korzeniowski who swam 1min 57.11sec.
World record holder Michael Phelps of the United States swam the fastest time of 1min 55.78sec in winning heat eight.
Burmester, who won the Commonwealth Games 200m butterfly gold medal in Melbourne a year ago, swims the semifinals tonight with the final scheduled for tomorrow.
Compatriot Andrew McMillan swam in the same heat but finished outside the top-16 qualifiers.
