NAGAMBIE LAKES, Victoria - New Zealander Cara Baker won the women's 5km title on the final day of the Australian open water swimming championships today at Nagambie Lakes in Victoria.
Baker clocked one hour and 20 seconds, although the title went to the first Australian home, 14-year-old Queenslander Bonnie MacDonald.
Coached by Grant Hackett's former mentor Denis Cotterell, MacDonald clocked a slick 1:00.27 to claim the Australian title.
Melissa Gorman, who won the world crown for Australia in Rome last year, had to settle for sixth place, a further 15 seconds back.
Disqualified after losing both timing transponders before finishing second in the 10km race on Saturday, Danielle DeFrancesco was the second-placed Australian in 1:00:29, with Queenslander Samantha Hoschke-Edwards (1:00.33) third.
