Top surfer Zen Wallis looks for a safe landing after hitting the eject button on a wave during the 2015 national championships at south Piha, Auckland, yesterday. Piha-based Wallis won heat six of the open men's division on a day of competition held in 1.5m surf.
"We saw a lot of amazing surfing by the top seeds, including Zen's brother Tane, and defending champion Billy Stairmand," contest director Ben Kennings said.
"Surfing is more of an action sport than an extreme sport - it's about a healthy, active, outdoor lifestyle."
The contest finishes on Saturday.
