Zane Schweitzer powered his way to victory in the second event of the Ultimate Waterman contest, charging through the Piha surf to win the 6km race.
The Hawaiian athlete broke away from the field on the final lap to win by 2 minutes and 36 seconds in a time of 41:58. The race was the second of eight disciplines in the competition which finishes on March 20.
Run by Surfing New Zealand, athletes compete in short and longboard surfing, stand-up paddleboarding endurance, waka-ama, big wave paddle-in surfing, underwater strength running and swimming, and prone paddleboarding.
First held here last year, the competition has attracted $1.2 million in funding from the Ministry of Economic Development's major events development fund.
