A national surfing centre and museum is planned for Mount Maunganui.
The centre, promoted by a group of local surfers, would showcase the country's surfing lifestyle and history with displays of surfboards, art works, graphic displays, games and memorabilia at a prominent downtown Mount location.
It would also be an educational and environmental training centre and tourist attraction.
Group spokesman Garth Falconer said central Mount sites were being studied as a location for the museum and the group was seeking contributors and sponsors.
