Kelly Slater's bold gamble backfired and cost him the world surfing championship in an incredible conclusion to the Pipeline Masters in Hawaii yesterday.
Slater and defending world No 1 Andy Irons paddled out for the final in Oahu with Australian pair Phil MacDonald and Joel Parkinson.
Slater tried his luck at a spot called Gums in a bold move but his first wave earned him only three points out of 10 and he didn't recover.
Irons (15.16 points) won the final from Parkinson (14.4), MacDonald (9.6) and Slater (9.6) to claim his second straight world title.
