Kiwi surfer Ricardo Christie's impressive run at the Rio Pro has come to an end, eliminated in the quarterfinals by Brazilian Filipe Toledo.
Christie had defeated the highly-ranked Toledo in the previous event on the World Surf League, but the hometown hero got his revenge with a 15.00 to 11.50 triumph.
The tour rookie was behind from the get-go after Toledo picked up a 8.33 wave on his first attempt, Christie only managing to respond with a 4.00.
Although the Kiwi out-performed Toldeo on the second wave (7.50 to 6.67), it wasn't enough to surpass the Brazilian, who goes through to the semifinal to take on compatriot Italo Ferreira.
The other semifinal pits two Australians against each other, with Matt Wilkinson taking on Bede Durbidge.
