American surfer Garrett McNamara has set a world record after riding a 90 foot wave in Portugal overnight.
The Hawaiian surfed the mammoth wave, measuring more than 27 metres, off Nazare Beach in Praia do Norte.
The wave came during the two month period of the ZON North Canyon Show 2011.
Al Mennie who helped tow McNamara onto the wave said they faced perfect conditions.
"Everything was perfect, the weather, the waves. Cotty and I surfed two big waves of about 60 feet and then, when Garrett was ready came a canyon wave of over 90 feet. The jet ski was the best place to see him riding the biggest wave I've ever seen. It was amazing," he told Surfertoday.com.
