Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles became the first player in NFL history to throw a touchdown pass and catch a touchdown pass en route to leading the team to their first ever Super Bowl title.
The Eagles beat the New England Patriots 41-33 in Super Bowl LII, fighting off a strong comeback effort from the Tom Brady-led New England side.
Foles completed 28 of 43 attempted passes for 373 yards, including three touchdown passes. He also had a one-yard touchdown catch, which was the product of a risky fourth-down trick play. He was named Super Bowl MVP.
With the win, Foles became the first quarterback to win the Super Bowl after starting the year as a backup since Tom Brady in Super Bowl XXXVI in 2002. Foles, who was called upon when Eagles starting quarterback Carson Wentz was injured late in the campaign, also became just the third quarterback to win the Super Bowl after starting three or fewer regular season matches.
"I felt calm...we felt confident going in and we just went out and played football," Foles said after the match.
"The big thing that helped me was knowing I didn't have to go out and be Superman."
The two sides combined for a record-breaking 1151 yards, surpassing the 929-yard mark set by the Denver Broncos and Washington Redskins 30 years ago. The day was orchestrated by the quarterbacks, who combined for 878 passing yards, breaking the previous 750-yard record set when the Patriots met Atlanta in Super Bowl LI.
After jumping out to a 22-12 lead at halftime, the Eagles found themselves one point behind with seven minutes remaining.
A crucial touchdown by tight end Zach Ertz followed by the Eagles recovering a Brady fumble all but sealed the deal, with kicker Jake Elliott slotting a late field goal to cap of a famous win.
"I could really tell after the first couple of drives he was in the zone and you couldn't come through on a bigger stage...I'm so proud of him," Eagles offensive tackle Lane Johnson said of Foles' performance.
"It really just came together. This was really one of our best offensive games.
"We stayed on our cues and got it done. It was hard fought all the way to the end, I promise you that."
