Suncorp Stadium ground surface to stay

The playing surface at Brisbane's new Suncorp Stadium - venue of an All Blacks World Cup match - will not be relaid for the third State of Origin clash between Queensland and New South Wales on July 16, despite criticism from league players.

Sydney Roosters duo Justin Hodges and Craig Fitzgibbon have both suffered serious knee injuries since the ground was reopened this month.

While spectators marvelled at the A$280 million ($324.44 million) revamp of the old Lang Park, players likened the sandy surface to playing on a beach.

The All Blacks face Tonga there during pool play on October 24.
