While away from home, working and living in London for a couple of years, he watched a documentary outlining just how many Kiwi kids go to school without lunch every day, or don't have access to basic healthcare.

Maybe it was a touch of homesickness or the low socioeconomic environments life on Barrier exposed him to that struck a chord - regardless, "Tongariro for the tamariki" was born.

The walk usually takes six to eight hours, he's aiming to run it in under two, 20km in length combined with 1300 metres of elevation, this undertaking really is no mean feat.
