"It is always good to get out of your usual training environment and try something different that still gives your body a good workout."
Leading decathlete Scott McLaren knows all about a full-body workout.
The 32-year-old from Auckland, who is hoping to represent New Zealand at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Scotland, is not lacking in confidence despite his lack of experience in the sport.
"I would like to send out a warning to all other novices that they are about to get their butts whipped and also to all pros - they are lucky that I am only doing the novice," he said.
The sporting elite are in good company. Word of mouth has seen the night race grow to become the largest SUP race in New Zealand, in only its second staging.
This year, it also features the secondary-school SUP race (all equipment can be provided if needed) and under-18 competitions in ski paddling and waka ama.
Event organiser Troy Huston said the night race was created to be a celebration of SUP. Nine categories cater for all levels of the sport, where enjoyment is the main priority.
"The excitement, energy and personal satisfaction received - especially from our beginner paddlers crossing the finish line, cheered on by more experienced paddlers - is where the event stands above other water-based events; a true family and community unity," said Huston.
St Marys Bay will be floodlit to identify the course-turning buoys and the Auckland City skyline will provide a surreal backdrop to the paddling experience.
The 1.3km course (some divisions do multiple laps) is laid out in a protected part of Auckland's waterfront. "This means that conditions are favourable and very safe to further boost the enjoyment and safety of all competitors," said Huston.
A laidback party atmosphere is expected and all entrants will go into the draw to win more than $5000 in prizes at the end-of-night party.
"Like-minded water and paddle enthusiasts get to fully embrace another avenue of getting on the water, keeping fit and hanging out with their mates.
"It is an awesome night, something for all paddling enthusiasts. Come and check it out."
