The top seeds won the national under-19 squash titles at North Shore yesterday, but in contrasting fashion.
Jared Conning, from the Royal Oak Club in Auckland, proved far too consistent for Hamilton player Callum O'Brien, winning the boys' title in three quick games.
But Kylie Lindsay, from Hamilton, was taken to five games by Jaclyn Hawkes, of Otago University, before winning the match 9-1, 9-7, 5-9, 5-9, 9-6.
There was an even tougher battle for the under-15 girls' title, with second seed Katherine McDonald, from Invercargill, finally beating the top-seeded Rachel McLeod, of the North Shore club, 5-9, 10-8, 6-9, 9-7, 10-8.
A feature of the championships was the success of some of the smallest clubs.
The girls' under-11 title went to Amanda Cranston, from the Ohakune club.
Coner Matson, from Mangakahia in Northland, won the boys' crown in the same division.
From today the interprovincial teams events will be contested, with the finals on Thursday.
