New Zealand's Shelley Kitchen could not overcome her first British Open squash hurdle, with a straight games loss to Malaysia's Nicol David in the opening round in Manchester today.
Kitchen, ranked 13th in the world, drew a tough first-up opponent in the elite 16-woman field, third-ranked David winning 9-5 9-1 9-4.
Top seed and world No 1 Rachael Grinham of Australia launched her title bid with a 9-2 9-5 9-2 first round win over Pam Nimmo of Scotland.
