Auckland's Brock Maskovich survived a late scare to win the inaugural midget eliminator race at WXC Speedway - Western Springs on Saturday night.
The 24-year-old grabbed the lead early on in the race while last-placed drivers were being eliminated behind him, and held it until fellow Aucklander Chris McCutcheon provided a late challenge.
Maskovich scraped in for the win though as McCutcheon crawled over the line with a mechanical issue; Ben Drummond was third.
"I could see Chris behind me and I know he's always strong on a slick track, his car is always hooked up so I kept an eye on him on the big screen," said Maskovich.
"Each restart I was trying a different line to see where I could get the jump on him and just really happy that we came away with the win."
