Wellington's Thomas Makea achieved a rare softball feat yesterday as the New Zealand Black Sox cruised to two easy wins on their tour of Canada.
In Trenton, Ontario, the Black Sox beat the Kingston All Stars 10-0 and the Belville All Stars 16-1.
Makea starred in the second game, making four hits from four turns at bat, and in the process hitting a single, double, triple and a home run.
Black Sox manager Grant McCarroll said he believed Makea was only the second player to achieve the feat while playing for New Zealand, after Cliff Joseph in 1984.
The game against Belville lasted just five innings, with starting pitcher Greg Newton facing eight batters for three strikeouts, and giving up a home run.
Paul Algar replaced him in the third innings and faced 11 batters for one hit and five strikeouts.
