Mexico launched a late flurry of runs at the men's under-19 world softball championships but couldn't avoid a 4-6 loss to the Junior Black Sox in Canada today (NZ time).
New Zealand broke to a 3-0 lead at Prince Edward Island after the first inning before Mexico pegged back the deficit with two runs in the fourth inning.
Bernard Hale and Mario Herbert extended the Junior Black Sox lead with runs in the fourth and fifth inning respectively, while Tristram Lupo-Samoa added their final score in the sixth inning.
Mexico staged a late comeback in the seventh inning picking up a further two runs to close the gap, but the rally failed to topple the unbeaten Junior Black Sox.
David Butler and Bernard Hale led the way with the bat for the Junior Black Sox both picking up two hits from three at bats.
On the mound pitcher Penese Iosefo faced 30 batters, taking six strikeouts while giving up seven hits.
New Zealand face their sternest challenge to date tomorrow when they play two times defending champions Australia at 10am (NZ time), followed by Venezuela later that day.
