Teenage New Zealand soccer sensation Marco Rojas is leaving the Wellington Phoenix for A-League rivals Melbourne Victory.
Rojas, 19, has penned a two-year deal with the Australian heavyweights, ending days of speculation about his future.
"Signing a young player of Marco's quality is a great endorsement for our club," Victory football operations manager Gary Cole said in announcing the move today.
"The mix of youth and experience at Melbourne Victory, along with our world-class facilities, really appealed to him. He had a fantastic season for Wellington."
While thankful to the Phoenix for giving him an opportunity, Rojas said he was delighted to be joining the two-time A-League champions.
"It was a big decision for me and I'm really looking forward to the opportunities that will be presented at Melbourne Victory," he said.
"I hope I can contribute to further success for the club."
Rojas was signed by the Phoenix two years ago after they sighted him during a week-long trial which was organised and paid for by the club's supporters group, Yellow Fever. Rojas, who has been named in the All Whites squad for upcoming friendlies with Japan and China, said he hoped the fans would accept his decision to leave the club.
The attacking wide player had a breakthrough A-League season after getting his chance through injury to Paul Ifill and terrorised many defences with his speed off the mark and ability to beat defenders. His defection is a major blow to the Phoenix.
He will join his new teammates on April 1.
