If the beneficiary of Sir Peter Snell's 1964 Olympic singlet wants to donate some of his profit to charity, the triple Olympic gold medallist has nominated Parkinson's New Zealand as an appropriate recipient.
Snell lost a brother to the degenerative disease which affects the central nervous system.
Last week the singlet sold to Wellington's Te Papa museum for $122,500. The seller offered to pay 20 per cent of the profit to a Snell-nominated charity when he first approached the former runner about the singlet's authenticity.
Speaking exclusively to NZME at his home in Dallas, Snell has since given more thought to the matter.
"I hope the beneficiary of that money decides charity deserves some of his good fortune. I hadn't thought of Te Papa as a place for memorabilia but I'm glad they decided to invest in it. With that in mind, I'd be happy to see my other stuff, including the two gold medals, there for free before I die."
