Jarryd Hayne's NFL career has been put on hold.
The former rugby league star turned NFL running back and punt returner was today waived by the San Francisco 49ers after failing to fire in the regular season.
Hayne signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent on in March, and shone during the preseason against other teams' back-up units.
However, once the NFL regular season got underway, he struggled. Hayne appeared in six games this season and registered eight carries for 25 yards and returned eight punts for 76 yards on special teams.
He had several fumbles in his punt return role and didn't impress enough as a pass blocker to justify a back-up running back role, despite injuries to other 49ers running backs.
