Sitting in a hospital bed a day out from the world championships with the spine of a poisonous fish embedded in his foot, the thought crossed Jon Paul Tobin's mind that perhaps he wasn't meant to go to an Olympic Games.
The boardsailor had endured the bitter disappointment of missing out on Olympic selection in four previous campaigns, and with one misstep 11 days ago he felt his fifth and possibly final opportunity slipping away.
Until then his bid for London 2012 had gone smoothly. He'd outshone Beijing gold medallist Tom Ashley in two events. The stage was set for him to do the same in Perth after winning the Sail for Gold regatta in Melbourne.
But his hopes of even making the startline looked over when he stood on a poisonous cobbler fish.
"I was sitting there in the hospital with a poisonous fish in my foot going 'well that's that then'," he said.
