KEY POINTS:
I left my hotel suite this morning on the 19th floor and nipped down to breakfast hoping to bump into some sailors, but no luck. Mind you, I was faffing about in the room quite a bit, reading the Herald, watching Paul Henry's brilliant rant about the police and the boy racer situation, and tuning in to Marcus Lush's breakfast show. What can I say: I'm a woman, I can multi-task.
I didn't see He of the Red Pants, Bruno Trouble, yesterday but I understand he's staying here at the SkyCity Grand Hotel, too. And I heard over 200 Louis Vuitton executives from all around the world are here to watch some sailing. In party girl speak, that means 200 well-dressed Europeans, which is exactly what our social scene needs.
Many of the wives, I hear, are spending more time getting pampered at the hotel's East Day Spa, than slapping on sunscreen and hitting the water to watch the races. Who can blame them? I'm thinking I might "look into" this this week and "investigate" exactly what sort of pampering these women are indulging in and "report back". Any excuse for a spa day, right?
Tonight is the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series Poker Tournament at SkyCity. Check in tomorrow for all the piccies and the goss.
On another sporting subject - cycling, it's come to my attention the gorgeous One News sport reporter, Toni Street, had a bit of a fall while doing the Taranaki Round the Mountain Cycle Race recently with her North Harbour rugby player boyfriend Matt France to help raise over $4000 for children's cancer charity Canteen.
Now, I don't mean to make fun of Tons. The woman donned hideous Lycra cycling shorts remember, all in the name of supporting charity.
Her twin brother Lance died of leukaemia as a toddler, and her colleague Steve Jamieson has a son suffering from cancer. And keep in mind, she may know all there is about sport, but she's apparently quite the novice cyclist.
But, when Toni confessed to crashing off her bike and face-planting, the evil Rachel couldn't help giggling a bit. To be fair, Tons was happy to have a laff about it too.
"I did the fourth leg," she said, "which went from Manaia to Eltham (one of the hardest and hilliest legs!), it was 27km and I did it in just over an hour."
"I was part of the netball team with Erica Burgess (Silver Ferns squad), Amber Bellringer (Central Pulse shooter), Lauren Burgess (Central Pulse midcourter) and Brendon Pongia (obviously a ring in!) - we came third behind the rugby and league teams."
"There was a funny moment right before I started my leg... being a novice on the bike, coming to a complete stop was quite a task, and I ended up hitting the deck right in front of Andy Slater and the whole league team!! [including Tony Kemp, Howie Tamati, Tawera Nikau, Lisa Tamati and Clarke Ellis]. Everyone was in hysterics. Thankfully I only grazed my knee!"
Good on for her having a laugh about it. If only all TV stars were like Tons and didn't take themselves so bloody seriously.
