KEY POINTS:
VALENCIA - America's Cup veteran Paul Cayard believes team unity will be as big a card as a fast keel or a good boat in winning the America's Cup.
Cayard, who has sailed in five America's Cups, has been in Valencia working as a commentator for an Italian television station.
"What I think is going to happen in this Louis Vuitton Cup is everyone is going to lose a race that they didn't think they should lose," he said.
"The big question is who is going to come back from a very disappointing day and still put 100 per cent on the table for the next race and who is going to have a hangover and be pointing fingers and worrying about what happened?
"In this cup the boats are closer than ever ... I think managing the highs and lows and getting a nice stability is going to be part of winning."
His comments come in the wake of Team New Zealand's disappointing first round performance, where they finished third after losses to Mascalzone Latino, Luna Rossa and BMW Oracle Racing.
The team head into round two needing to improve their boat speed, starting and tactical decision making.
Cayard said Team New Zealand and BMW Oracle Racing are both very solid teams.
Cayard was employed by Oracle in the last cup but was sidelined after a clash with syndicate boss Larry Ellison.
"I would say one big difference is that Team New Zealand is the most 'team' in this competition. Mascalzone has a really good feeling in the group but I think Team New Zealand is the example of a solid team.
"BMW Oracle Racing I think is less a team. They have had plenty of money, they have had plenty of opportunity. They have been given everything they could possibly want but my gut feeling is that people are not as compelled and as attached or glued together there."
Team New Zealand's match against Mascalzone Latino was postponed yesterday on day one of round two. The match was to have taken place on the south course but the breeze never settled enough for racing to begin.
The match was rescheduled for last night after flight two, in which Team New Zealand had the bye. In the matches sailed yesterday Chris Dickson's BMW Oracle Racing cruised to an easy 3m 17s victory over United Internet Team Germany, Victory Challenge beat Team Shosholoza by 52s and Luna Rossa beat Team China by 2m 57s.
