Dennis Conner's Stars & Stripes yachting team are within one race of being eliminated from the America's Cup after their 1m 2s loss to Seattle's OneWorld this afternoon.
Off-water manoeuvring has thrown an element of doubt into the whole competition, but unless Team Dennis Conner succeed in their bid to have OneWorld disqualified from the challenger series, the New York Yacht Club entrants have a huge job to stay in contention.
In today's result OneWorld went 3-0 up in their best-of-seven quarter-final repechage contest, and they need just one more win to qualify for the semifinals of the Louis Vuitton Cup.
Today's racing got under way nearly four hours late because of light winds, but the southerly breeze then quickly filled in, getting up to 18 knots at times.
Stars and Stripes were on the back foot from the start, dipping back before they went over the line, apparently worried they might have crossed too early. The result was that OneWorld led by 9sec at the start.
The Seattle team were 19sec ahead at the first mark, and continued to pull away through the match.
