OneWorld threw away the lead in their America's Cup challenger yachting series semifinal race with Prada on a day of wildly shifting winds on the Hauraki Gulf today.
The wind played a big part in the match, shifting between the south and west and mostly ranging between about 10 and 14 knots, on a grey, rainy afternoon.
Prada won by 20 seconds, after taking the lead on the fifth leg when Seattle's OneWorld allowed the trailing Italian boat to get well away to the left.
The wind shifted and suddenly Prada had the advantage, leading by 28sec at the fifth mark, after having been 38sec behind at the start of the leg.
OneWorld had led round the first four marks, and allowed Prada to get big separations from them on the third and fourth legs.
At times on both legs, wind shifts appeared to give the advantage to Prada, but each time that happened the wind shifted again back in OneWorld's favour.
However, allowing yet another large separation on the fifth leg proved to be one time too many for OneWorld.
Today's result means both boats have won one race each in their semifinal match, but because OneWorld went into the contest with a one point penalty, Prada have now taken the lead.
