New Zealand's big boat KZ-1 New Zealand, built to revive the 90-foot waterline yachts of old, sailed into a legal storm in 1988.
America's Cup defender Dennis Conner responded to the Kiwi challenge by building a 60-foot catamaran 'Stars & Stripes' which handily won the series 2-0.
Although a New York judge awarded the America's Cup to New Zealand, the Americans won on appeal.
The 'mismatch' was in part responsible for the creation of the America's Cup Class yachts, which were first used in the 1992 series.
