Today's racing in the Louis Vuitton Cup was heartbreak for the French team Le Defi Areva as they faced Italian challenger Mascalsone Latino in a battle between the only two winless teams in the regatta.
The French led Mascalzone at the first mark, but then trailed at the second, third and fourth marks, before regaining the lead after a fierce tacking duel on the fifth leg.
On the last leg, downwind, Mascalzone took the lead a few minutes before the end and went on to cross the line just 4sec ahead of the French, who were also penalised just before the end.
The French went back to carry out their penalty turn, and the official winning time for Mascalzone was recorded as 5min 19sec.
Organisers said the penalty given against Le Defi had been for trying to stop the Mascalzone Latino team from gybing.
Winds: NW 10-14k
Winning Margin: 05.19
