Dennis Conner will run the Stars & Stripes team that will represent the New York Yacht Club. Conner, a four-time winner of the America's Cup, has been a member of the NYYC for 20 years.
"We are pleased that Dennis Conner will be carrying our flag in the next America's Cup," said NYYC Commodore George M. Isdale Jr. "No competitor has had a greater impact on the modern America's Cup."
Dennis Conner was starting helmsman and tactician aboard Courageous, which defended the Cup for the NYYC in 1974.
He was skipper of Freedom, which defended the Cup in 1980.
He was the first person to lose the America's Cup with Liberty in 1983, while sailing for the NYYC, and the first to win it back in 1987, when he skippered Stars & Stripes '87 to victory.
He also successfully defended in 1998, sailing a multihull against KZ1, the New Zealand "big boat".
With a one-boat campaign in 1999-2000, Conner's team came close to winning the Semifinals of the Louis Vuitton Cup with Ken Read, also a NYYC member, as helmsman.
