The GBR Challenge yacht Wight Lightning beat Sweden's Victory Challenge by 48sec in round robin one of the Louis Vuitton Cup this afternoon.
Before today GBR had won just once, compared to the Swedes' three victories, but today their decision previously to bring in Andy Beadsworth as their new starting helmsman appeared to pay off.
In a tough contest at the start the British pushed Victory Challenge hard, and the Swedish boat went over the line just slightly too early and so had to turn around and start again, while GBR surged away.
British skipper Ian Walker said Beadsworth had done a great job at the start, as had the rest of the crew. GBR had changed their mind halfway through the start procedure, he said.
Originally the intention had been to tack right, but just in time they changed their plan and went left.
Victory Challenge also went left and were slightly early, so GBR had been able to put pressure on them and drive them into the starting line pin, Walker said.
But the conditions had made it a hard day to stay ahead, and his team were under pressure to perform.
