Kiwi sailor Jo Aleh hopes rule changes aimed at getting more women involved in the Volvo Ocean Race will help abolish a long standing stigma.
Organisers of the around the world event want to give world class female sailors more opportunity to race the event, by introducing new rules around the crew configuration aboard the boats.
Aleh says professional sailing is largely closed off to women and the reaction from some male sailors she's spoken to has been mixed.
Aleh says it's about educating male sailors, and she hopes in the future it won't have to be a rule enforced upon people but is actually a better way to do it.
Aleh is keen to sail the Volvo Ocean Race, but says it would be dependent on what role she has in the crew.
