Captain Xavier Rush is committed to Auckland for a further two years, his personal and provincial rugby ambitions outweighing the commercial lure of Japan.
Rush considered following team-mates such as Adrian Cashmore, Charles Riechelmann and Dylan Mika, who took up contracts in Japan, but will re-sign with Auckland today.
"The last year has been great, with the NPC, then the Super 12, and at 26, I would like to think I have the impetus to keep going," Rush said.
"Going to Japan was tempting financially, it was very big money and I had to weigh that up against being with Auckland for seven years already.
"But my passion for Auckland rugby is still strong, there is still a lot to do and I looked at someone I admire like Zinzan Brooke who stayed until late in his career.
"I believe I am yet to peak as a rugby player and also think Auckland are at the start of another strong era and I'd like to be part of that. It was hard sorting it out, but I have had a good break and am ready to go."
Rush will lead Auckland on Friday against Manu Samoa. He believes Auckland can defend their NPC title, even if a group of regulars are absent on World Cup duty.
