KEY POINTS:
Australia 25 Italy 18
Australia had to work hard to beat Italy in Rome this morning after they too gifted points with poor discipline.
Mat Rogers, Guy Shepherdson and captain Stirling Mortlock scored tries for Australia, while Italy failed to get one.
However, first five-eighths Ramiro Pez kicked five penalties in the first half to give them a 15-13 halftime lead.
Italy led in the second half against Ireland, England, France and Wales in this year's Six Nations but lost the first three and drew with the Welsh.
It was the same story again as Mortlock got the last of Australia's tries eight minutes from time to clinch the win.
