Brisbane-bound Brad Thorn says the decision to leave New Zealand rugby and head back to his former National Rugby League club is one of the hardest he's had to make.
It was announced today that the 12-test All Blacks lock had signed a three-year deal with the Brisbane Broncos starting from next year.
"Family played a big part in my decision," Thorn said in a statement.
"It was a hard call to make. I have very strong bonds here in Christchurch and I've really enjoyed playing here. I also have great memories of playing for the Broncos."
Thorn, 29, played his last test in the 2003 World Cup, having initially turned down a chance to tour Europe with the All Blacks at the end of 2001 because he didn't believe he was ready for international rugby.
He is currently playing for Canterbury in the NPC and has also amassed 37 Super 12 games for the Crusaders.
Before switching codes at the end of the 2000 season, the 196cm, 116kg league back-rower won three premierships with Brisbane as well as featuring in eight league test matches for Australia and eight State of Origin games for Queensland.
Thorn is seen as a ready-made replacement for skipper Gorden Tallis, who is expected to retire at the end of the season.
"Brad has made a big contribution to Canterbury rugby and has been a great person to have around. He has a real strength of character and has given everything he's got each time he has pulled on the jersey," Canterbury Union chief executive Hamish Riach said.
Canterbury coach Aussie McLean said while was sad to see Thorn go, "Brad's got to do what's right for him, and if going back to Brisbane to play is the right decision then I support him in that."
