What does Matson's rejection mean for the Blues?

Rugby reporter Patrick McKendry on what it means for the Blues now that Tabai Matson has declared his commitment to the Crusaders.

What does this mean for John Kirwan and the Blues?
Firstly, this will be a painful blow for Kirwan, who will probably take Matson's rejection to heart. The Crusaders' assistant was one of the main pillars of Kirwan's proposal to the board, which was effectively another job interview. One train of thought is that this rejection cannot be good for Kirwan's chances of retaining his job, another is that the board's failure to advertise for alternatives means they're stuck with him.

Does this put Kirwan's plan in jeopardy?
Kirwan's plan is unravelling by the day. He has been clearly angry at the Herald's role in reporting the twists and turns and there will probably be a few more yet. Gut feel suggests he will be doing all he can to recruit alternatives to Matson he knows he can work with.

What are the alternatives now for the head coaching role?
They are limited because, as already mentioned, the board have put their faith in Kirwan.

What does the Blues' board need to do?
Apparently the Blues have received a few inquiries from coaches interested in Kirwan's job, only to rebuff them. These developments might change the board's thinking. Maybe they could be asked to apply. In the meantime, New Zealand Rugby needs to get involved here to work out a way forward for the Blues which includes a communication strategy because this whole issue is turning into a public relations shambles.
